Tips and Guidelines to Hanging wall art and Mirrors.

One important factor that can either make a design look balanced or just wrong is placement of wall art and mirrors.

What to select:

Selection of the correct items is the first important factor.

Choose what you like, but be sure the content and frame are both sympathetic to the flavour or theme of the space.

If your room has a lot of warm factors like fabric and timber, a mirror or art with a metallic frame and glass can add a hint of shine and help balance the warm elements.

If your room is very neutral in terms of colour, a painting or print can balance the need for colour, especially if co-ordinated with a carefully selected scatter cushion or lampshade. Colour can be just a splash, and doesn't need to be a whole wall or bold statement.

Where to hang:

Placement of wall art and mirrors can be critical to your design.

If the room/area has a central focus like a fireplace or buffet etc, be sure to centre it on the wall and centre the feature wall piece above it.

If you have a large bold wall item off centre, or more on one side of the room, check you have something that will balance it on the other. This can be either other wall pieces or in some cases, furniture can compensate.

How high to hang:

Working out the height to hang each piece can be daunting.

As a rule, average you and your partners eye height and that should be the starting point to planning where the mid point up the wall to hang your wall art or mirrors.

Check this by scanning your eyes around the room. You should be looking into the middle of all art, mirrors ect. Obviously if you hang a set of two images, one above the other, use the mid point as the space between them.

Hang them safely:

The last thing anyone wants is wall art or mirrors to fall. You will not only probably end up with a broken frame, glass or mirror, but it will damage whatever it falls on. That could be a table, buffet, polished or tile floor or even a family member. So please be sure to get advise or professional help with the actual hanging. Nail in hangers are only suitable for smaller lightweight items, so be sure to use appropriate hanging hardware and proceedures.

Do NOT hang on screws as the screw thread can wear through the cord or wire over time.

It is important to also check the strength of fittings and wire/cord on the back of the item. It is not just the hook that can fail. Test it under stress while it is on the floor, don't wait for an accident to find out. This applies to newly purchased items as well as those being rehung.
